| Clarity Research LLC, Founder and Principal: June 2009 - present • Produced
a market feasibility study for a movie theater investment in an
unreached rural Tennessee market showing potential annual revenue of
$1.1 million.
• Developed the market analysis, income models, regulatory strategy (510k), and product development strategy, for Endo|Bath- a $3.2 million medical device start-up focusing on the disinfection of endoscopes. • Performed primary market research to identify the critical elements in the decision making process of generous philanthropic grants (exceeding $250,000 annually) for the Maclellan Foundation. Kimberly-Clark Professional Health Care, R&D Early Explore Program Leader: November 2006 – June 2009
• Produced
a product development roadmap for sterilization packaging that launched
three new product development projects in 2009 with a combined net
present value of more than $200 million for Kimberly-Clark Healthcare.
Determined the plans and budgets for these projects representing more
than $4.3 million in research expenditures and labor in the 2009 and
2010 R&D budgets.
• In
2008 designed and moderated a series of in-depth interviews to
understand the value of product features for exam gloves. The results
of this study were used to optimize the design of the current premium
gloves.
• In
2008 led informal ethnographies in operating rooms in the United
States, France, and Germany to better understand the usage issues of
surgical products before, during, and after procedures.
• In
2008 designed a pricing game where groups of users in the
United States, Australia, UK, France, and Germany. The results were
used to estimate the value of concepts and features against current
product solutions to confidently develop business plans and product
strategies.
• From
2007 to 2008 led informal ethnographic surveys of hospitals and
hospital support centers in the United States, Canada, France, Germany,
and Australia to understand the practice and issues surrounding the
handling of surgical instrument trays.
•
Developed a process of creating a strategic product development roadmap
by combining best practices from medical device strategy and road
mapping from other industries. This methodology became a template that
I used to lead road mapping strategies for Kimberly-Clark’s $800
million medical supplies business: sterilization packaging, surgical
drapes, surgical gowns, and exam gloves.
• In
2007 led two development projects with expense budgets of $250,000
each and controlled spending to within 5% of budget while delivering
project objectives. Furthermore, successfully terminated one of
the projects at the end of 2007 when it was demonstrated that the 3
year net present value would not exceed the continued cost of
development. This decision saved Kimberly-Clark $1.8 million and an
additional year of development time.
• Designed
and performed in-depth interviews to explore product opportunities for
sterilization packaging, surgical products, and exam gloves. These
multi-national interviews produced more than 1500 unique customer
voices for each of these product spaces leading to several new product
requirements that had never been identified.
Perimeter Global Associates, Research Director: May 2002 – November 2006 • In
2006 consultanted to Campus Crusade for Christ Eastern Europe to
create a strategic measurement system. Designed a research
program to determine performance metrics that involved interviewing
senior leadership as well as personally conducting cross-lingual focus
groups in Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine. This research was used to
deliver a roll-out proposal for an internet based metric system.
• In 2005,
designed a research study using a Wisdom of Crowds approach to generate
a statistical estimate of the spiritual beliefs of Europeans. This
methodology produced a result with a +/- 0.5% variance over a
population of more than 724 million people. The results of this study
are now used by the leading publication for global statistics in this
area of interest.
• In 2005
designed and moderated a focus group of foreign church planting
facilitators to understand the research needs for church planters in
Europe.
• In 2005
performed an informal ethnographic survey of village and town church
plants in Northeast Romania to understand the impact and dynamics of
these faith communities.
• In 2004
there was no existing network for missions researchers to collaborate
on information and methodology. As a result, created the European
Missions Research Group (emRG) by proactively networking across
national and cultural boundaries to define common grounds for the
formation of a multi-national team. This community of practice is the
first of its kind and has provided more than four networking
conferences since its inception as well as a web portal for data
sharing.
• In
2004 performed an informal ethnographic survey of village churches
in Ukraine to understand models and strategies being deployed to
reproduce these types of communities across Ukraine.
• In 2003
and 2004 performed an informal ethnographic survey of the
recognized and underground churches in central Kazakhstan to understand
models and strategies being deployed to reproduce these types of
communities across Central Asia.
• Previous
missions research practices used a simple regression model to predict
the growth and spread of churches in a region. In 2003 created a
new growth model based on behavioral inputs. This new model enabled
senior leadership in the Ukrainian church planting movement to achieve
their national growth targets by modifying specific behaviors.
• Mentored
researchers from Ireland, France, Greece, Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Russia, and Romania. In addition, trained and coached the first
national research team for the Ukrainian Church Planting Movement. This
required the development of cross-cultural and cross-lingual tools from
a broad range of sources to guide team members with no previous
research experience. This team now has oversight of research that
targets the establishment of more than 14,000 additional faith
communities in a nation of 48 million people.
•
Conducted ethnographic site interviews and evaluations for church
growth in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Romania, and Czech Republic. This
research was used to enhance coaching and advisement of personnel
located in each of these nations.
• From
1999 to 2001 led informal ethnographic surveys of Akah, Lahu, Lisu, and
Hmong tribal environments in northern Thailand, Burma, and Laos to
understand the role and impact of Christianity in their villages.
Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Research Scientist and Team Leader: June 1994 – April 2002 • From
2001 – 2002 invented Kimberly-Clark’s first method for
quantifying the containment function for Disposable Personal Care
Products: “gasketting”. Bench tests developed from this
method were used to measure and evaluate long range options for
improved containment in Disposable Personal Care Products.
• From
1999 – 2002 served as the principal materials technology
liaison to product development groups in Kimberly-Clark business units
for the development of new elastic non-woven material for use in
Disposable Personal Care Products.
• From
1998 – 1999 led the commercialization team for
Kimberly-Clark’s first multinational value tier diaper-
Huggies® Dry Comfort. This involved coordinating the activities of
my team in the United States with the regional business teams in Manila
and Bangkok. Furthermore, coordinated the harmonization of designs
across manufacturing platforms in China, India, Thailand, Philippines,
and Malaysia with the operations teams in each of these nations. The
multi-national Huggies® Dry Comfort product made Kimberly-Clark the
#1 or #2 market share leader in each of the countries in which it was
sold.
• From
1997 – 1999 managed the US-based product development team for
value and economy diapers in East Asia. Led the team to produce new
economy diaper designs for Philippines, India, and Thailand as well as
identified a key absorbent material improvement that could be
implemented on Huggies® brand diapers globally.
• From
1994 – 1997 developed improved absorbent systems for
Huggies®, Poise®, and Depend® products.
• In
1995 designed and taught a course on absorbency modeling for other
product developers at Kimberly-Clark.
